Review of She Hate Me (2004) by Matthew P — 23 Oct 2007
Oh, Spike Lee. Such a prominent filmmaker who blessed us with "Do the Right Thing" and his fantastic documentary "Four Little Girls". In 2000 he made the terrible "Bamboozled" and in 2004 he released "She Hate Me", a film that is so ambitious and so, so terrible.
I feel like I should applaud Spike Lee for being so versatile, but this film is a mess. It cannot make up what it wants to be. At first, its a statement of corporate life. Then it takes an unexpected turn when John (Anthony Mackie) is in need of money and is offered an unusual business proposition by an ex-girlfriend (Kerry Washington).
That proposition is to impregnate lesbians for $10,000. Later on, John gets mixed up with the mafia, creating another subplot. There is three movies trapped in this tired, overlong film. Shame on you, Spike Lee.
