Review of She Done Him Wrong (1933) by Adrian B — 05 Dec 2010
One of those films that had a major impact when it came out because of the social realities it was released into, but that doesn't really keep its allure decades removed from those times. Mae West is enjoyable, and you can feel how uninhibited, liberated, and powerful she came across at the time. Some of her banter is totally entertaining and her sexuality still puts off some force, but those are the only real enjoyable things about an otherwise bland, wandering, unfocused film. Cary Grant's presence is limited and doesn't have much of an effect on the personality of the thing and the rest of the cast and sets are there only to give West a sounding board and stage.
Enjoyable if you're a fan of West or identify strongly with the thirties. Otherwise, will probably leave you with a feeling of indifference.
