Review of Shazam! (2019) by Ssesses — 06 Apr 2019
This is the best Super Hero movie to date. I loved the surprising back seat that Shazam took to focus on the family and the villain. The dynamics of the foster family was incredible, and hit home for me and the rest of the audience. These characters are grounded in reality and provide an accurate representation of a family. The villain's family dynamics were also fantastic, leading a a massively underrated and scary villain with opposing family dynamics to Billy Batson. It was incredible to see these characters demonstrate morals and feeling based on their situation. It is the most real family representation in a movie to date.
Beyond this, the super hero dynamics and action was also incredible, with fun and fantastic fight scenes and great motives. This makes Shazam stand out in a crowd of monotonous super hero films in our generation.
Shazam is funny, too. The jokes landed and never felt forced. The jokes were derived from the characters and how they would converse and react. These characters felt so real, and the jokes felt like they came from the characters rather than a focus on jokes first.
Shazam's writing is impeccable. It creates such a beautiful world with characters that feel real and situations that fit the characters. The characters and scenes had beautiful continuity, making everything feel real despite the movies focus on magic wizards.
