Review of Shaun of the Dead (2004) by Joey S — 10 Apr 2013
Shaun of the Dead is a hilarious action-comedy from the team behind the British TV show Spaced that blends all the excessive bloodshed of zombie movies with the dry humor of a British buddy comedy, and it works spectacularly.
It's about a lovable loser named Shaun (Simon Pegg) whose life seems to be falling apart when he's suddenly faced with the problem of an outbreak of a zombie virus. With the help of his slacker friend (Nick Frost), his ex-girlfriend (Kate Ashfield), and two others, Shaun has to rescue his mother from the undead, and then salvage his relationship with his ex-girlfriend.
The first half-hour is full of increasingly blatant (and very funny) foreshadowing of the zombie outbreak that Shaun seems to be oblivious to ("You've got red on you.") until it's too late, and after that all hell breaks loose with creatively violent zombie deaths left and right.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are very funny as always, and they work really well together. Shaun of the Dead is a movie that works equally wonderfully as a comedy and a zombie flick, and it infuses both genres with a heavy dose of British wit and satire that makes it a whole lot of fun to watch.
