The zombie movie originally started out as a fresh new idea. It challenged movie making because it needed to be fast, yet zombies themselves are known for being lumbering and slow. Even the name itself, "living dead", was a contradiction.

And as we draw into the twenty-first century, the zombie has become an overdone, boring cliche. But, Shaun changes all of that. In other movies which had the heroes yelling and bashing the undead head on, Shaun takes his time, even at some points unwittingly ignoring the world around him.

The film is whip smart with movie and zombie cliches and jabs, ("Throw the records!" "Purple rain?" "No." "The Batman Soundtrack?" "Throw it.") The film is incredibly funny and enjoyable, but the squeamish should be warned, there is a lot of blood.

The film consistently makes fun of itself, and yet still remains more comedy than parody, though it is classified as both. Shaun is a well-rounded hero, and by the end of the film, you'll be biting your nails and cheering for him to survive.

But be warned, if the person next to you runs out of nails and starts biting their flesh, run! 5/5.
