Review of Shattered Glass (2003) by Tristan F — 09 Nov 2007
Shattered Glass is a pretty unassuming but absorbing account of the true story of Stephen Glass, a young and ambitious journalist for highly respected magazine, The New Republic, who was caught out "cooking" stories - basically making them up.
The suspense, and entertainment of this film is watching the annoyingly passive aggressive, cloyingly needy Glass (well played by Hayden Christensen) have his deception unravelled, thanks to the efforts of reporters at Forbes Online (the welcome comic presence of Steve Zahn) and Stephen's editor, Chuck (Peter Sarsgaard).
This is the film that made me a fan of Sarsgaard as his performance is basically one long, slow burn - as his placid demeaour turns into outrage at Glass's fictions. A very solid look at jouralism and the media, and how the desire for entertainment oftens shadows the quest for truth.
