Review of Shattered Glass (2003) by Randolph G — 16 May 2010
Engaging true story of an ambitious young reporter who fabricates a whole series of stories with New Republic magazine, the popular left-of-center magazine focusing on political issues. His deception unravels with an article about sexual improprieties by Young Republicans in a hotel during a convention.
His colleagues are ready to believe the story at first, but the assistant editor is looking for verification of facts of the to-good-too-be-true article. Discovery of the fabrication of this story leads to the firing of the chief editor and promotion of the assistant editor, who begins checking facts and sources for all of the young man's prior stories for fabrication.
This film show how someone can succumb to pressure with an easy fix and become dependent upon the quick fix. It is also a study in how ambition unconstrained by ethics is self-destructive and destructive of others.
