Review of Sharkwater (2006) by Aislinn O — 12 Apr 2008
Sharkwater opens with a lot of promise, beautiful underwater cinematography of sharks swimming peacefully and sad music cue that this film is going to make you cry. Unfortunately, the rest of the film doesn't live up to its opening credits.
The film gives a very superficial glimpse at the shark finning industry and teaches you less about sharks in 89 minutes than watching a half-hour nature documentary on Animal Planet would. Points are repeated over and over, rather than adding anything new to the film's central argument.
What your left with is the filmmaker's personal stories as he documents, which come across as self-important and vain. He talks about himself a lot in a boring monotone, suffer boy voice. I've never heard narration quite like Rob Stewart's before, in that it is both melodramatic and boring at the same time.
I didn't hate this film though, and thought it a good first effort, I just would have liked if it focused a bit more on sharks and shark finning than on the director. Glad I ended up seeing this one as a rental.
