Review of Sharkwater (2006) by Harry E — 05 Feb 2009
My first 5-star documentary. This film, features biologist and filmmaker -- and fellow Torontonian -- Rob Stewart, swimming amongst many sharks, without any protection. And at first, you might ask yourself: is this guy mad?... well, at least until you find out how improbable it is for a human to be killed by a shark. Soda pop machines kills more humans than sharks, enough said. This amazing film looks at the interconnections between sharks and our ecosystem - specifically it's role as a top predator, and it's regulation of 70% of our fresh oxygen supply on earth. Sadly, it also looks at the large-scale systematic slaughter of this animal, and our unwillingness to protect it.
Stunning cinematography, and a great storyline round out this well needed documentary.
