Review of Shaolin Soccer (2001) by Matthew A — 10 Jul 2009
What a weird movie! Perhaps one of the cheesiest films I have ever seen.
The film is about a guy with a dream to teach people kung fu which can greatly help them with everyday things (and those things involve parking your car, slipping on banana peels, etc). From time to time he comes up with ideas to promote kung fu, but fails every time, until him and one of his friends team up to start a soccer team where they use shaolin martial arts style to play it.
The beginning is sort of boring and is nothing special, but gradually strange things start to make appearance on the screen. By the end the movie becomes completely ludicrous and that is why it's so good. It tries to be serious, but if anything it's something you shouldn't perceive it as. You should just sit back and enjoy the ludicrous bits, because they sure will make you laugh.
Acting was nothing special at all, but then again, the movie's strength is not in that. It's all about the ridiculously funny way they play soccer.
