Review of Shanghai Triad (1995) by Sean G — 18 Jul 2007
Style triumphs over substance in Zhang's take on the gangster genre, a notion that may be expected given the director - and his obsession with his muse Gong Li, which ended after production of this film - although in this case the last half-hour leading up to the denouement falls flat from achieving any remarkable resonance.
One of the lesser entries in the ouevre of a truly great filmmaker.
