Review of Shanghai Kiss (2007) by Non A — 16 Nov 2007
Can't explain how much I like the movie because the quality of the movie is romantically ineffable. One thing is that I actually felt the same way when I went to Shanghai for the first time. It's a city of love at first sight, and a city of lust, caution.
I was very impressed with the plot: a man who couldn't find himself at home but felt so much embrace by the city he never wanted to be because of a girl who changed the way he would think about himself conceptually.
Then, things get dramatic when he had to make a choice between a fantasy he created in Shanghai and his reality in Los Angeles. Both of them were no less awesome, and he needed to find his way back "home" despite the choice he chose.
I love this movie because it tells a simple story of a man who could be anyone: he could be you or he could be me. Love is a dangerous thing, especially when it is a place to hide from reality -- brutal reality.
