Review of Shanghai Kiss (2007) by Andrew K — 12 Oct 2007
Surprisingly good plot and funny dialogue. The protagonist is obnoxiously funny, and at times a womanizer on the outside, but on the inside he's vulnerable and still emotionally affected by loss of his mother at childhood.
Good character development throughout the movie complimented by great acting from Leung, Panettiere, and to an extent, Hu. The script work was started by director Ren when he was 18(!!), yet the portrayal of the inter personal relationships between Liam and the beautiful women and his father and his friend, is quite deep, and touching at times.
The whole cultural identity aspect of the movie adds an extra and significant touch when you can relate to the character personally (if you're Asian American).
