Review of Shanghai (2010) by Daniel W — 09 Sep 2010
A film that has been marvelous in details but lost its weight in plot. It has one of the best portrayals (best CGIs) of Shanghai at war time, and beautiful costumes nonetheless. John Cusack gives an average performance with unavoidable comparison (or criticism while comparing) with Humphrey Bogart.
Just when Chow Yun-Fat does what he does best in a gunfight after a clumsy flashback, the characters comes hastily together for a conclusion, compromising the plot to please investers. Truth is, money does not indicate box office success.
