Review of Shane (1953) by Jeff C — 08 Apr 2009
Flawless. So many great scenes in this film, yet the one I always remember is Ladd and Heflin ripping a tree stump out of the ground together - a bond of sorts is forged. And yet, the idea that a Lone Gunman who has a solitary existence can enjoy a moment of 'normalcy' while performing a pedestrian task is simmering just under the surface: nice subtext.
Helluva barfight, as well. Great fun, and just about as sad as Old Yeller at the nd - is Shane dead, propped up in his saddle, or is he just being resolute in ignoring the boy's plea?
