Review of Shane (1953) by Andrew I — 07 Feb 2012
The cinematography is stupendous, for sure, but when you that sort of landscape in every backdrop, how could the camera fail? No, "Shane" succeeded in my book much more for the little character things, including the way wide-eyed Joey becomes increasingly infatuated with Shane as he sees the hero's mysterious violent side bubble up or the sexual tension between Shane and Mrs.
Starrett. And Jack Palance's menacing gunslinger is way scarier than he should be for this kind of a movie. Even the way an early fist-fight in the movie is shot foreshadows shades of Scorsese. I'm not a huge fan of Westerns and sure Brandon de Wilde has some cringe-worthy moments, but this is one I can easily respect alongside such classics as "The Searchers" and "Unforgiven".
This is a western.
