Review of Shame (2011) by Jovan J — 20 Oct 2012
Michael Fassbender is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors. Successful in big-budget genre fare like X-Men and smaller, more intimate films like this one, he is showing a range few actors have. This film's very mature and somewhat raw, but at the same time restrained portrayal of sex addiction is riveting, engaging, and heartbreaking.
Carey Mulligan's charming role as his equally screwed-up sister is great, and left me begging for more backstory, which the audience does not get, so although this is a great slice of life film done in a very intimate way, there is no character transformation or revelations of character motivations to speak of, which detracts a little from the whole picture.
