Review of Shame (2011) by David S — 02 Feb 2013
A boring tale, sold with lots of hype. There is A. Nothing revolutionary about this film; B. Nothing remotely exceptional about this film; and C. Nothing nearly shocking about this film. It yanks every 'shock-factor' cliche from the closet where it has rightfully been locked up, and ends up boring the watcher with old ideas that were maybe controversial in the 80's.
Possibly even 70's. I mean, the lead apparently goes 'so low' that he even accepts an oral tease from a man. Really? What's so low about that? And Fassbender's performance has also been completely over-hyped.
He is the Abercrombie & Fitch-jock's version of an insightful actor (if based on this portrayal - I have nothing against him in other films). Badly directed. Badly written. Empty. And not in the least shocking.
.. Not even the subject matter is shocking, although it is packaged and marketed as being 'intense' and 'shocking'. Boring. Give me the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel any day over this - at least it knows what it is, succeeds at what it is and the performances are out of this world!
