Review of Shame (2011) by Rob S — 04 Aug 2013
Addiction is powerful, whether it's alcohol, drugs or sex. Something happens, a line is crossed where what used to give you pleasure now only causes pain, regret, well, shame. That's what this movie tries to delve into, and it succeeds most of the time.
Scenes where seemingly nothing is going on, but held so uncomfortably long that you can't look away. Yes, there is some graphic stuff, but there are also some very real, heartbreaking moments. Michael Fassbinder makes you truly believe that the things he does are completely uncontrollable and masked so very well.
Carey Mulligen's rendition of New York, New York....uh, fabulous. Very hard to watch, but something to behold.
