Review of Shame (2011) by Stephen C — 10 Aug 2012
Brandon is a conformist. He's got the IT job and minimalist apartment, he even knots his scarf the right way. Once upon a time, he'd have worn a bowler hat, carried an umbrella and waited on the 08.
23am to London town. Only trouble is, his private life threatens the veneer of respectability. His sex impulse and a needy sister refuse to conform. Shame takes the pulse of our times, suggesting that beneath the slick digitised veneer lies a messy stash of online pornography.
D'uh! The film's more conventional than it thinks - we're stunned when men's private lives don't match their public deeds. A glimpse of a woman's wedding ring is shocking. Shame doesn't quite earn its traumatic denouement, but ambition carries it through.
You will discuss this movie with friends. Dates, not so much.
