Review of Shame (2011) by Kelsey S — 12 Dec 2014
Shame was exceptionally raunchy and provocative. A very different film then what we're used to seeing Michael Fassbender in. But there's nothing wrong with that, I love it when an actor has range.
Steve McQueen was relentless and held nothing back in Shame. Initially I refused to accept the film as it was because I wanted more out of the plot itself. A well written film from the beginning until the end.
However I had no deal breaker type complaints. I will admit I let my anticipation get the best of me and set my expectations a little too high. As the film starts the tone is evident. It totally coincides with the title.
The cinematography was predictable and mediocre but it didn't take away from the film at all. Only Fassbender could pull off this kind of "sexy" if you will. The sexuality of our protagonist played its own role.
It actually opposes Michael Fassbender's character in a dangerously potent way. Sex addiction is a sensitive subject and if not executed just right the mistakes stick out like a sore thumb. The diversity displayed genuinely makes one appreciate the acting chops it takes to make an emotion let off from the character strong enough to become the antagonist.
I've been a firm believer in Fassbender, Shame just adds to his already impressive resumé. Carey Mulligan had a pleasant supporting role that had a noteworthy contribution. There was the twist that caught my attention, and I loved it because I saw Michael Fassbender's character downward spiraling towards this about midway through the movie.
The twist is so moving it puts the title Shame in bold letters. I even told myself they have to go there at some point. My biggest problem with Shame had to be it's seemingly lazy and predictable ending.
The conclusion just wasn't executed at all. I know for a fact there had to be better ideas floating around Steve McQueen's head. Although I only liked Shame a lot, I loved the emotion that came with the film.
