Review of Shame (2011) by Tor M — 14 Aug 2012
I guess this is a personal film for McQueen, I read somewhere that the personal elements are connected with the state of being lost and not the sexual addiction that steal the plot and setting for this film.
"Shame" is a sad and semi-shocking film about not fitting in. There is loads of sex here since, as mentioned, we meet a guy that is a sex addict. We also meet his sister - she seem to have some other issues.
It's very pretty in a way, the pace is nice and it's enjoyable. Not as a date movie, but as a "view by yourself" movie. Fassbentder, who plays the character Brandon does a very good job.
Not only will he be remembered as the most gracious runner of the year, but he's really dominating this film. His relationship with his sister Sissy is mysterious and weid but it works out really well thanks to the great performances.
There is some "American Psycho" in it and maybe a bit "Requiem for a Dream" but this is most of all an original and quite important film that had to be made.
