Review of Shallow Hal (2001) by Eric H — 22 Sep 2012
"Shallow Hal" is one of the Farrelly brother's better films. The film follows a man who only judges women based on their physical appearance, until one day when he is stuck in an elevator with a man who puts a trance on him that makes attractive women ugly, and no so attractive women beautiful.
It sounds like a good premise for a comedy, and it is. It works perfectly, and hidden under the comedy is a message about the old saying' "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". The primary cast, especially Jack Black, do an admirable job with the material, with Jack Black giving one of the better performances of his career.
The film is one of the lighter conedies to come from the directing brothers, but that doesn't mean it isn't uo to snuff. It is a comedy that wears it's heart on it's sleeve, and it does so proudly, never becoming too preachy.
It is a good film, and one that anyone can enjoy.
