Review of Shallow Grave (1994) by Ross G — 25 Mar 2009
Good first effort from the director-writer-lead actor trio who brought us the much better "Trainspotting" two years later.
Like a modern day reinvisioning of Hitchcock, "Grave" tells the story of three flatmates who must contend with the consequences when they bury their dead lodger and take his briefcase full of money.
The early scenes are a true joy to watch, as we see the three friends interacting. These sequences are exceptionally well-written, and the acting is very naturalistic. Unfortunately, as the plot gets more convoluted, the character interaction feels more and more forced. The ending rings true, though, despite some of the more unbelievable scenes preceding it.
