Review of Shallow Grave (1994) by Ky K — 10 Sep 2010
They find a roommate dead with money hack him up, kill a couple of mob thugs who want the money back, go insane with paranoia ?.. The pitch for this movie sounds like a great Indie movie I would like to see, but the movie just drags and does not work.
I ignored Eberts review (he always hates yuppie movies) and paid the price. Its not that there ?bad? yuppies (ie Seinfeld or Scrubs), The characters and the story do not come off as authentic. I did not buy into there original personas so when they become paranoid and insane?.
, whatever. The characters start off as interesting catty group of ?yuppies? and take off into flat cliché characters. I was hoping for a cross between ?Trainspotting? and ?Scrubs?. About a third of the way through this movie I was thinking about what on the other channel, but no I paid to rented this and it got to get better.
The ending is better than the middle but not much better. The only thing suspenseful about his movie was my disc had a scratch and one of the chapters after the murder would not play. So I had to piece together what was left of the weak plot.
This movie need a English (American) subtitle track. Several of what were probably very funny quips from Ewan McGregor et al were lost on me. No matter how many times a rewind and turned up the volume I could not understand what he was saying.
