Review of Shallow Grave (1994) by Rachael H — 23 Feb 2011
A kind of horror / thriller... a sort of 'noir' transcendence of genres I suppose. This 90's Cult film is darkly humourous and oddly entertaining. None of the three protagonists are remotely lovable, they are impossible to identify with despite this film being hailed as a testament to friendship, or rather, the breakdown of friendship through greed and guilt.
Perhaps McGregor's character counters that in places but he remains irredeemable. Boyle's slick, uniquely-stylistic directing can be spotted from a mile off here and the film's accompanying soundtrack confirms its reputation of as a black comedy.
A fantastic twist at the end seals the deal to what is a strange journey to victory.
