Review of Shallow Grave (1994) by David T — 27 Apr 2011
A Danny Boyle first...Before Trainspotting their was Shallow Grave...
This is superb British Film making...It has lashings of dark humor, harrowing scenes of grotesque brutality and suspense.
This is a movie that leaves more unanswered questions then answered...Where did the money come from? Who was chasing him and why? What happened after the credits? I personally like that in a movie, you can almost conjurer up your own prequel in your head...How would you have filled in the gaps?
I think this movie has such a charm, a very Britishness about it - Some films just have that identity - I got "Withnail and I" - It has that same feel to it.
It's also great too see rising stars of the day Ewan Mcgregor, Christopher Eccleston and Kerry Fox as well as Keith Allen and Ken Stott before the big movie and TV roles came calling...
Danny Boyle has of course gone on to make some of the most renowned British films of all time including his follow up to "Shallow Grave" and arguably one of the greatest if not the greatest British film of them all "Trainspotting".
I think fans of British cinema and also of cult classics like "Withnail and I" "Trainspotting" "Human Traffic" and even "The Full Monty" to name a few will really enjoy "Shallow Grave".
