Review of Shallow Grave (1994) by Rahul J — 02 Jun 2012
I'd forgotten just how delightfully Hitchcockian this was. Danny Boyle's debut is a jet black comedy about early 90s greed with blistering performances by Christopher Eccleston, Kerry Fox and a very young Ewan McGregor.
The three are cynical Edinburgh flatmates in need of a fourth. Flatmate 4 becomes Hugo, whose untimely death reveals a huge stash of cash but also involvement in organised crime. When the consequences of their greed come calling flatmate turns on flatmate as madness starts taking over.
It's a genuinely unsettling film, hugely watchable and with real substance. Danny Boyle's at his best when he's ready to take real risks in investigating the human condition; with humour as dark as this his work is hard to beat.
