Review of Shakespeare in Love (1998) by Cole M — 09 Aug 2009
The perfect example in showing the occasional idiocy of film critics. Shakespeare in Love got best film over Saving Private Ryan. Please explain the logic in that. Which film will be remembered 60 years on? exacty.
The film is made very well, with all the elements meshing perfectly well to place is in Elizabethan-era England. Joseph Fiennes plays the most gender confused genius of all time, right up there with Mozart. The constant sonnet quoting and the endless depiction of fluffy-dovey love starts to become annoying after a long while. The film just lends itself to being too sensationalistic in its depiction of love.
The best actor in the film is Judi Dench, as usual. One of the only scenes to look forward to is the last scene of the play, where the genius of the story is actually believeable.
Otherwise get ready for a soundtrack that never leaves your head (not in a good way).
