Review of Shadowlands (1993) by Caspar R — 17 Jan 2010
Shadowlands is one of the most dignified and honest love stories ever put to the silver screen. Anthony Hopkins is perfect here, and represents a personage worthy of admiration. While being both sad and subtle, this movie remains thoroughly engaging and never once seems to drag. It has literary gradeur scarcely matched in film.
Certainly, it's historical accuracy is somewhat incomplete and leaves a lot to be desired. But the story is told well, and so we can take it instead as a myth about author CS Lewis, rather than trashing it unfairly based on less-than-perfect facts. Even those doubtful of plodding biographies can rest assured, this movie will make you feel and will make you wonder.
There are men behind the wonderful tales we know in life. I apprecaite the children's stories of Narnia a lot more now after watching this. But even more than that, this movie has the capacity to open your eyes to life and to the questions that drive us and require our time on a daily basis.
You will be richer for having wandered the Shadowlands.
