Review of Shadowboxer (2005) by Tori S — 09 Sep 2006
Well-directed thriller by Lee Daniels. Cliched at times and the relationship between Mikey and Rose feels off. I could never quite get a good grasp of Mikey (played by Cuba Gooding Jr). Some of the line delivery feels off (only in a very few moments), but the main problem is that the character is so quiet in the film to the point where he's a mystery and remains one for the entire film.
The character development seems inconsistent and spotty with him (especially in an act that changes the film's direction), and since he's the main character, this doesn't bode well. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Stephen Dorff's parts are surprisingly minor.
Both play their roles well despite the small parts. Surprisingly graphic/frank with its portrayal of interracial relationships. And even when the film gets off track, it is always fairly entertaining.
It's worth a watch, a high 6/10.
