Review of Shadow of the Vampire (2000) by William G — 10 Sep 2007
If you're interested in silent movies, German cinema or vampires (or all three as is my case) this is an excellent little film.
It's about the making of Nosferatu in 1922 but with a twist. The actor for Count Orlock (the vampire), Max Schreck is a bit more than he seems. His refusal to appear in anything except full costume in order to 'inhabit' the role starts to really creep out the cast and crew, especially when they begin to fall mysteriously ill.
Willem Dafoe is exceptional in the role of the Nosferatu, considering he had to compete with Max Schreck and Klaus Kinski who were legendary in the same role.
The film is interspersed with silent bits complete with intertitles, which really adds to the period setting.
Overall, well worth the watch.
