Review of Shadow of the Vampire (2000) by Ryan V — 04 Oct 2013
I did not find this film to be pretentious or overly-stylized at all. I think the arcane dialogue adds to the uniqueness of the movie. It is also appropriate - insane, drug-addicted director utters equally insane lines.
This is a truly quirky little gem of a flick. I love the fact that Count Orlok is no Hollywood male underwear model in chalk-white makeup. Willem Dafoe's vampire is a vicious, slimy, slinking, cringing/threatening, lascivious creep and you are happy to see him die.
He is also occasionally hilarious. I liked the visuals, the acting, the strangely poetic dialogue as spoken by John Malkovich with his beautiful voice. Having seen the original Nosferatu more than once (which is truly spooky) I can appreciate this take on its origin and isn't it kind of fun to think that the original movie was made with a real vampire?
