Review of Shadow of the Vampire (2000) by Jonathan A — 30 Mar 2008
Beautifully shot, alternative-history docudrama about production difficulties encountered on the set of the silent, German horror film 'Nosferatu', when filmmaker F.W. Murnau realizes his star is an actual vampire.
Stylishly directed; there's a nice vintage feel to this one, and Willem Dafoe is amazing as the demonic Max Shreck. I didn't like the fact that most of the actors spoke in goofy German-American accents, but I let it go after getting swept up by the film's story, dark sense of humor and occasional suspense.
A truly rare gem.
