Review of Shadow of a Doubt (1943) by Nessa Or V — 23 Jan 2008
My favorite Hitchcock, and his too. The charming and citified Uncle Charlie comes to visit his small town relatives, and his adoring niece celebrates his presence until she begins to fall prey to dark suspicions.
Joseph Cotton is ominous, and his speech in the pub to his niece is one of blood-curdling cynicism, made all the worse when delivered to a child on the brink of adulthood. Legend has it that Hitch wrote the chilling speech himself.
