Review of Shadow of a Doubt (1943) by Ron H — 14 Dec 2007
This isn't my favorite Hitchcock movie by a long shot, but the ending is by far the funniest. It ends like a Simpsons Halloween Special with a great deadpan understatement of the year type monologue to cap it off.
It even beats the innuendo of North By Northwest. Considering it's Hitchcock, I'll assume it was intentional, but anyone else I would assume it was laziness in writing, acting, and editing. This movie really does play more like a dark comedy than a full out suspense flick.
The family is cute and funny and I really cared about them. The only problem I had was the tacked on relationship with the detective. They go on one date that isn't really even a date and the next thing you know they're discussing marriage.
Things were different in the forties, I guess.
