Review of Shadow of a Doubt (1943) by Ann G — 30 May 2009
This movie would be almost perfect if the writing were just a shade more taut. otherwise, it's definitely one of Hitchcock's best--the perfect blend of saccharine 1940s family film and crime thriller.
the story nurses you along through the everyday life of a charming California family with a darkly charming and enigmatic uncle come to visit. the suspense steadily builds all the way to an unexpected climax that only Hitch could pull off.
great storytelling, memorable characters, and excellent cinematography. my one complaint is still that the writing just wasn't as sharp or tight as it maybe could have been.
