Review of Shadow of a Doubt (1943) by Indi V — 09 Dec 2011
Up until the big climax at the end, which feels incredibly silly and looks it, this film is fantastic. Granted, you can pretty much tell from moment one Joseph Cotten is up to something, and I wish this had been more subtle.
I wish it wasn't so incredibly obvious. This does not make Cotten's performance bad, on the contrary, he's incredibly terrifying. But without a doubt the best in show is Teresa Wright, whose performance is absolutely brilliant.
She goes from innocent to paranoid so naturally and believably, that you're waiting to see what she'll do next and if Joseph Cotten will thwart her. Still, with a better climax and an ending that doesn't feel so rushed, this would've easily been counted as one of Hitchock's best.
As it is now, it's a good movie with a fantastic performance from Teresa Wright.
