Review of Shadow of a Doubt (1943) by Daryl L — 17 Aug 2013
We know the central character by the name of "Uncle Charlie". He has a niece who goes by the same given name. We do not know from the start what is going on between the two of them. But we are thrived wanderingly by the amount of mysteriousness the former Charlie gives us.
In his conversations with his niece, he gives us wisdom through words that are destructive to humanity and spirit. He has this dark enigma of a "bad guy", existential, philosophical, smart, but utterly disturbed.
Joseph Cotten has given this character a true personification. Hitchcock, who is also known for his film noirs has given this film a signature approach, simple yet very effective - through the use of familiar camera angles, editing, and aesthetics.
A great film indeed.
