Review of Shade (2003) by Andrew C — 27 Nov 2007
Compared to 'All In', it's a masterpiece. Compared to 'Rounder's, what I consider to be the best poker movie I have seen (bear in mind I haven't seen House of Games yet) it's only average.
There are a hell of a lot of big name actors in this one, which is a shame because the acting overall is pretty poor. Maybe there was less of a focus on the script and more on the sheer awesomeness of the card tricks. There is a special feature on the dvd showing some of them which I recommend you check out. The thing I had a problem with though is that Shade is all about mechanics and hustling, cheating not actually winning properly which Rounders had a lot more of and I personally prefer that.
Those gun stand off's looked like they were blatantly ripped out of other films, only executed a lot worse with crappier one liners. I liked it overall, but I just don't think it has anything on Rounders and that's why it only gets 3 stars from me.
