Review of Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero (2018) by Joseph Q — 02 May 2018
Reducing this film to an attempt at creating just another "buddy flick" is to quite miss the whole point of redemption. There is value in everything, and everyone, as we observe in Stubby's on-screen example.
In company or on his own, Stubby shows viewers that he is of value and that his presence is purposeful. He clearly opens our eyes to his heart's desire to serve, even if underappreciated or doubted.
Stubby, coming from being scorned as nothing more than a stray and a beggar, shows us how to value life in the midst of a madness that would indiscriminately obliterate life and its beauty. He even shows us, in his joyful way, the gift of gratitude in his ability to appreciate the value of encounters with nature and its creatures while the chaos rages around him.
His achievements make it clear that he deserves a chance at experiencing life to its fullest, along with those around him. As far as the buddy business...well, that should easily move any heart familiar with hope.
It is, rather perfectly, Stubby's well deserved destiny.
