Review of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978) by James S — 03 May 2009
I freely admit that...with the exception of Peter Frampton...I loved this movie 30 some-odd years ago. Little did I know. The music of the Beatles is nothing to attempt to rubber stamp by making it "modern.
" This movie attempted to do that...and failed miserably. The four stars obviously had no cinematic or theater experience...their chartacters were one-dimentionable at best. Only good points: other band's treatment of the Beatles' music (Aerosmith, Earth, Wind, and Fire.
..), the unexpected and dramatic funeral sequence, and Donald Pleasence not looking or behaving at all like Donald Pleasence. Biggest surprise of all: George Martin, producer of the Beatles' music, produced the music of this movie as well.
Even a genius doesn't always get it right.
