Review of Seymour: An Introduction (2015) by Tim M — 02 May 2016
Seymour Bernstein is a brilliant pianist and a noble human who thinks way outside the box. "Seymour: an introduction" from debuting director Ethan Hawke gives the subject depth and life.
There are many levels to Seymour and to the documentary. Some are subtle and others not so much. More about a man and his ideas on life than about the music, but enough of both to make the viewer think about what he or she is watching.
Seymour is by all accounts one of the brilliant 20th century pianists, but you probably don't know who he is. Hearing why he choose his own path is reason enough to watch, but this movie is a smooth 84 minutes into the soul of a great human.
Hawke makes brief narrative appearances and injects himself into the story in large part due to the friendship the duo have. A tribute to a man who so richly deserved one Seymour is a well-executed one at that.
