Review of Sexy Beast (2001) by Private U — 06 Jul 2008
No no no no no no, no fucking way, made me look a right cunt!
Yet another classic British gangster film, and Ben Kingsley's Don Logan proves that when it comes to gangsters the British do it best - Kingsley makes Tony Montana look like Ratso Rizzo from Midnight Cowboy!
"What's the film about?".
Well Don Logan - a top London heavy - knows a bloke, who knows a bloke who's got a job coming up, and Don's tasked with puting a team of hard workers together. This team includes Gary Dove (played by Ray Winstone), but Gary or Gal is retired and has become ucustome to life on the old Spanish hacienda. That doesn't stop Don from a putting in a bit of persuasive jesting, but will Gal come round to the idea?
Jonathan Glazer makes an example of film making in its most simplicit form - the plot is simple and straightforward, its not even essential, what is essential is the outstanding narritve and Sterling performance from all of the actors, particularly by Winstone and Kingsley.
Watch out for Kingsley's performance when he cuffs his way out of getting arrested after causing trouble on the Spanish airlines - Stella performance!
Fans will no doubt enjoy films such as "Love, Honour & Obey" and "The Long Good Friday".
