Review of Sexy Beast (2001) by Tommy J — 16 Sep 2008
Beginning and ending in something of a gangster's paradise, this solid British crime film surpasses its genre limitations with style, wit, and terrific performances. Leading the pack in that field is Ben Kingsley, who is a seriously delicious spectacle to behold.
His cockney patter, his corrosive wit, his sudden bursts of rage and violence all sketch in a character who is simultaneously scary and fascinating to watch. The great Ray Winstone and Ian McShane make utterly convincing hoods, and their performances subtlely effective, in opposite ways.
It's a variation on the "one last job" setup, but Kingsley, Winstone, McShane, and director Jonathan Glazer keep us splendidly involved.
