Review of Sexy Beast (2001) by Iain M — 07 Jan 2008
Proceed with caution. If you have only ever seen Kingsley in Ghandi or Schindler's List your jaw will be in the basement. This is harrowing and wonderfully acted evil. Essentially a love-story - Winstone's character just wants a quiet life with the woman he adores - Glazer spoons on the style and tension, culminating in an impressive underwater heist.
Gal (Winstone) is quiet, disillusioned - quite possibly a shadow of his former ganster self now happy to sunbathe all day. Don Logan (Kingsley) is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Rottweiler with a sore head - a psycho and psycological bully.
Exceptional cinema.
