Review of Sexy Beast (2001) by Jack C — 22 Mar 2008
A subtle, stylish assault on the senses here from British director Jonathan Glazer. The former music video director lends a unique visual sense to this quintessentially English crime flick. Feeling more like a European art house picture than a gangster film, "Sexy Beast" is full of visual delights and great touches.
At the centre are two performances both equal in greatness but both completely different. Winstone is quiet, subdued and plays the retired criminal character to perfection. At the other end of the scale is Ben Kingsley's manic, insane performance as genuine psychopath Don Logan.
With these performances anchoring the film, Glazer creates an exciting, unique British gangster film that will take some beating.
