Review of Sexy Beast (2001) by Drew M — 08 Sep 2008

Wildly original without coloring outside the lines. Having heard about this movie extensively during the past 8 years, I built up a lot of preconceived notions and was pleased to find most of them dashed by this firecracker.

When a heist/crime movie takes nearly 2/3rds of its duration to get out of the first act set up (aging gangster comes out of retirement), it sets the film and viewer off balance in the best way possible.

Not sure how much of the style was needless (particularly that last shot), but the opening is perfect.
