Review of Sexy Beast (2001) by Michael G — 22 Mar 2009
Poor Ray Winstone... All he wants is to be left alone.
Sure he's a hardened ex-criminal who probably doesn't deserve your sympathy (or pity).... he spent his entire career killing and maiming in order to achieve the good life he's retired to in sunny Spain... but let's try to overlook exactly how he got his ill-gotten gains for a moment shall we...?
Just as he's really getting to enjoy the slower pace...Out of nowhere...some of his old comrades come calling with one more job and not taking no for an answer.
Ben Kingsley is LOGAN. A man so ferocious, so pants-wettingly, sadistically, terrifying in his constant, abusive, relentless determination to re-recruit poor Ray.... that you can't help feeling bad for our reformed criminal.
As bad as Ray might have been in his past life... NOBODY should have to deal with a creature as vile and repugnant (and brilliantly portrayed) as Kingsley's character "Logan".
...and just when you think - - "Is there anybody MORE horrifically frightening than this Logan, guy"?...
Enter IAN McSHANE for an all too brief handful of "colon-emptying", "shit-chilling", "death-wishing upon yourself" scenes.
Suddenly LOGAN seems like the nice guy.
Trust me... as frightening as Kingsley's character is... NOTHING is more terrifying than the cold, remorseless, shark-like gaze of Ian McShane.
You will fear for your very life...
(and you'll love every moment).
This film is brilliant on all levels...
The first 10 minutes are slow (but quirky) and not really indicative of what will follow...But once the ball gets rolling...
Highly reccomended!
The only reason I give it 5 stars is because FLIXTER doesn't allow for 6.
