Review of Sexy Beast (2001) by Hugo G — 26 Apr 2009
The story might be familiar (mobsters try to convince an ageing gangster to do one last heist) but there's something new here. Director Glazer shows real style and Winstone is brilliant as usual. But it's Kingsley who lifts this film, and he gives the performance of his career (and that's saying something) as the pychopathic Don.
It loses it's way in the last half hour, becoming a fairly obvious and fairly traditional Brit gangster flick, and the dream sequences involving a creepy rabbit belong in Donnie Darko, but Sexy Beast is justifiably famed as a great of the genre.
